How the Supporting Character Saved the Day

As a fan of solo role-playing games, I have discovered that they suit my lifestyle perfectly. Due to time constraints, having the freedom to engage in a game whenever I can spare a moment is incredibly valuable. It’s the flexibility and ease of picking up where I left off that make solo role-playing an ideal form of entertainment for those of us with busy lives.

When it comes to rulesets, Ironsworn has become my go-to system. Its versatility shines when playing different characters, especially since the rules adapt well to various scenarios without compromising the depth of the game. The ability to weave intricate stories with ease while navigating through challenges and quests is what sets Ironsworn apart as a premier choice for solo role-play. See the Character Backgrounds Table (by Shawn Tomkin) to get a glimpse into Ironsworn’s character generation possibilities.

One aspect I particularly enjoy is taking on the roles of lesser-known characters from established fantasy universes — be they from books, films, or video games. These characters come with their own backstories and personalities, providing a rich foundation upon which to build my adventures. It’s like stepping into their shoes and exploring what might have been or could be within their worlds.

Moreover, assuming the identity of a side character eases the creative burden that often comes with role-playing. While there’s a framework already in place due to their existing narratives, there remains ample space for personal creativity. This blend allows me to expand on their stories in unique ways without starting from scratch — affording me a satisfying balance between structure and imagination.

These are some character inspirations, I thought about playing out:

Benjen Stark

Between saving Bran Stark and John Snow Benjen Stark saved the day, Without him everything the main cast did would not have mattered. What did he do?

Vesemir

In the year before his death at Kaer Morhen Vesemir leaves the stronghold without telling anyone where he is going. What did he do during these months, and how do his experiences lead to his sacrifice at The Battle of Kaer Morhen?

Luna Lovegood

She uses the Quibbler to spread truths about Voldemorts and the Death Eater’s deeds. What does she have to do and sacrifice in order to obtain her information and protect her sources?
